Governing Body

Welcome to the section of the Delapre Primary School website where you can find out more about the school’s governors, who are all volunteers, and the work that we do.

My name is Richard Warr and I have been Chair of Governors since 2013. Before this I was a Parent Governor and then a Community Governor. Having had three children of my own educated at the school I am committed to enabling all “Delapre Children” to achieve their full potential whilst at the school.  What does the Governing body do to achieve this?

Our main role is to bring our personal experience and expertise into the world of education and to provide the appropriate mix of challenge and support to Mr Portrey, the Headteacher and his team.

One of the ways we do this is by setting the strategic direction, policies and objectives of the school and then monitoring progress against these. This can be a challenge as the school grows in numbers of pupils; the diversity of pupils increases; the school building programme continues; and new ways of measuring pupil progress are introduced by the Government.

One of the key requirements of our Governing Body is to agree the school’s annual budget and regularly monitor the management of spending against this. Reports are presented at Finance Sub Committees on specific areas of spending, with special attention given to spending linked to targeted Government funding. Additional resources such as the provision of teaching assistants or one-to-one support are then allocated as necessary.

We meet as a Full Governing Body at least once every school term. In addition we have sub-committees who report to the Governing Body on specialist areas.

At Delapre Primary School, individual governors take the ‘lead role on behalf of the Governing Body’ for each subject area, for example Literacy, Numeracy and.  All governors participate in ‘learning walks’ around the school reporting back to the Governing Body.  We are committed to providing an excellent and safe learning environment for all pupils to enjoy during their time at our school.

Finally, the governors thank all the staff, both teaching and non-teaching, at the school for their incredible levels of commitment and professionalism in delivering a great education to all of the children. Thanks also go to the parents for their constant support, with encouraging numbers visiting the school to see how and why we do things in the way we do.

I can be contacted through the School Office and look forward to meeting many parents during the school year.
